Top 5 Winter Elopement Tips

A lot of people plan a summer or fall elopement, but winter ceremonies are underrated in my opinion! If you’re not a cold-weather lover, it’s hard to imagine your best day ever with snow in the background. But if you plan properly and cover all the bases, winter can be the most amazing season for an outdoor elopement! I've photographed a wedding in Minnesota in January, and in Yosemite in February. Yes, it was cold, but they were SO beautiful and so worth it! Here are my top 5 winter elopement tips so you can plan an epic snowy adventure for your wedding day!

Top 5 Winter Elopement Planning Tips

1) Pick a location that’s accessible year round.

Many popular hiking spots, like the Blue Ridge Parkway, are closed during the winter months due to snowfall. (If you are specifically thinking of the Blue Ridge Parkway make sure to check this website for road closures!) But you can still have a beautiful outdoor ceremony with stunning views! Ask your photographer to suggest elopement locations that are easily accessed on foot, and be open-minded. In general the trails and stunning locations anywhere are a lot less crowded during the winter. If you plan to hike, it’s also important to consider how much longer and more difficult it is to hike in the snow when picking a trail.

2) Choose a wedding dress that you can layer with.

3) Get the right boots.

Wool. Socks. are a game changer. Don’t forget to pair them with your boots and consider how much snow you could encounter on your day and be sure your boots are tall enough that snow won’t sneak in. There are so many great lined boots as well that would keep your toes warm. Just be sure to break in your boots before your day. You can also have a pair of back up shoes in your car to change into after.

4) Hand warmers and the right accessories.

Buy handwarmers (like these HotHands packages available on Amazon) and keep them in an outside pocket on your backpack! Don’t forget to also pack warm mitts and a hat (or earmuffs if you don’t want to ruin your hair). Having a big warm blanket to wrap around each other is also a good idea in case you get cold and makes for some cute pictures! You can also pack a thermos of hot chocolate or coffee to share for a warm pick me up!

5) Make dinner plans ahead of time.

Even if it’s just the two of you or a small gathering of your friends and family, it’s a great idea to plan your eating arrangements well in advance. After a long hike or ceremony in the cold you’ll want to be able to get cozy and relax. If you’re staying at a cabin or an AirBnb, you can hire a private chef to have a warm, romantic dinner prepared for you when you get back. Or you can head to a local restaurant and get hot drinks and delicious food to warm up and celebrate. If you’re not familiar with the area, ask your photographer or planner to help you find a restaurant or food options that fits the vibe of your day!
