Looking Glass Falls Engagement Session - Asheville, NC

Looking Glass Falls south of Asheville is a favorite summer spot off of the Blue Ridge Parkway and for good reason - who doesn’t want to swim under a waterfall? The waterfall and surrounding rocks are always accompanied by people trying to beat the heat and enjoy a beautiful view, which isn’t too hard to do since the water is often freezing! (But that didn’t stop Lexi and Jake from getting their feet wet!). Since the waterfall is so accessible, you can park right on the road and simply walk down a few steps to get right to the base, weekdays and early mornings are an ideal time to go to avoid the crowds.

There were quite a few people when we arrived but Lexi and Jake are clearly very comfortable together that they didn’t seem to mind. We followed the stream down a bit to find some privacy and enjoy the waterfall from a distance. It didn’t take too long for them to loose their shoes and be enticed by the cold water.

One of my favorite things about shooting in nature is the ability to explore during the session. It would be such a miss to get to this beautiful waterfall or mountain top and spend the whole time focused on how your sitting, or if your hands look weird or if you two look awkward on that rock etc. I love to tell my couples to just go wander and do whatever they want for a bit, to just enjoy themselves as if they were here any other day.

This has such an impact for many reasons…

  1. It gives them a break from the camera, as they are probably nervous having their picture taken anyways, this is a good chance to give them space.

  2. They get to create memories together.

  3. They instantly become more relaxed and naturally interact with other which allows for the sweetest candid moments.

  4. It also gives me a chance to pull back, look at the big picture and get a fresh perspective for their images and find ways to incorporate and highlight the beautiful landscape and note how they naturally interact to create a more natural experience for them.

  5. Everyone feel a bit more energized. (Nature tends to have that wonderful effect.)

So if ever you have wondered what a session looks like behind the scenes, it’s mostly snuggles and exploration and laughter.
